Running for cures: Barbara’s story

After watching friend after friend face cancer, and recently enduring her own cancer scare, 43-year-old mother of two Barbara Whitehurst is determined to fight back against cancer.

One of 68 passionate Peter Mac supporters who have already joined Team Peter Mac for The Age Run Melbourne (26 July 2015), Barbara says she is determined to make a life-saving difference to people facing cancer.

“Can I say I want a cure? I’ll do absolutely anything – anything that’s going to help find a cure and help people recover better or get diagnosed more quickly. Anything that can help,” Barbara said.

For Barbara, the search for cancer cures is urgent.

“I’ve got friend in at Peter Mac right now. She’s a fighter. She’s beaten her cancer before, but it’s come back. She doesn’t want it to beat her this time either, so I’ve already told her that I’ll also be running for her,” she said.

Barbara has already raised an amazing $1895 for cancer research. She says she simply asks her friends, family, and work contacts to donate, and reminds them regularly.

“I don’t mind asking, because I’m not only asking them to support me – I’m asking them to also support Peter Mac. It’s just about opening people’s eyes to exactly how much Peter Mac actually does.

“I’m actually surprised by how much support I’ve had already and I’ve still got a lot of people that have said that they’ll donate. I just keep reminding people on Facebook every two weeks. And each time I post about it, I’m getting more donations in.”

When you run as part of Team Peter Mac in Run Melbourne, you will help make a life-saving difference to people facing cancer.
