We have a number of face to face teams currently fundraising across Australia, talking about the vital work our cancer researchers are conducting here at Peter Mac. This means our trained fundraisers could be knocking on doors in your neighbourhood or speaking to people at your local shopping centre.

The impact of face to face fundraising

Face to face fundraising is used by the most respected charities around the world, and is about 20 years old. Charities in all sectors, including health research, human rights, humanitarian aid, overseas development and animal welfare use this form of fundraising.

Frequently asked questions

Do fundraisers ask for cash?

No. Due to the challenges of security and cash handling legislative procedures, our fundraisers are not permitted to ask for cash, nor are they permitted to accept cash if it is offered. They are only allowed to ask for ongoing donations through direct debit and information that can be electronically captured and transferred securely.

How do you ensure the security of my personal data?

We take the security of your personal details extremely seriously and have measures in place to protect them. See our privacy policy for more information.

If you have chosen to support us by direct debit, you’ll receive a follow up phone call and welcome pack to confirm we have the correct details and to thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Direct debit is one of the most secure and effective ways of giving to charity. It reduces administration costs and generates a predictable and sustainable stream of income, allowing us to plan for the future.

Peter Mac transacts and receipts 100% of a regular monthly giver’s donation.

Does my donation go to a third party?

Peter Mac transacts and receipts all of your donations.

We need to rapidly increase the funding available for cancer research and, although it may seem surprising,  growing our regular monthly giving program by working with third party face to face fundraising providers is currently one of the most cost effective and sustainable ways to do this. 

We pay these third party fundraising providers a one-off fee for every new regular monthly donor who kindly decides to support us. This fee varies according to how much is donated, but the average fee for the Financial Year 2016/17 was $386.

It is important to note we pay this fee out of a pre-allocated budget, not out of an individual’s donation. The other important thing to know is that this is a one-off fee, and many of our donors choose to support us for several years (with no further payments being made to our service providers for ongoing donations).

For every $1 we invest to increase support for cancer research, we expect to receive at least $4 in donations.

It is our passionate and committed donors who make our regular monthly giving program so powerful in raising significant additional funds for cancer research. 

Why don’t you run your own face to face fundraising team?

Working with third party face to face fundraising providers is currently one of the most cost effective and sustainable ways to secure donations. Using the services and infrastructure of a specialist third party for this type of fundraising across Australia is more cost effective than employing our own team, and results in much larger net returns for cancer research.

What time do your fundraisers work?

Our face to face fundraisers work throughout the day. Those stationed in shopping centres work to the opening hours of each specific centre, while our door to door teams may visit at different times depending on where you live, and do not fundraise on Sundays or public holidays.

Why don’t you use volunteers?

We need to rapidly increase the funding available for cancer research, and growing our regular monthly giving program is currently one of the most effective and sustainable ways to do this. 

Volunteers play a vital role in many areas of our work, but a project of the magnitude and importance of our regular giving program needs significant and consistent resourcing, and we have found that paid personnel is the most effective way to do this. 

Is face to face fundraising regulated?

Yes. Face to face fundraising is one of the most regulated forms of fundraising.

All activities must comply with all regulations set by state and territory governments and local authorities.

We expect all of our suppliers to comply with lawful workplace policies and processes, along with the appropriate fundraising standards and codes of conduct. We take our obligations in supply chain management very seriously and expect our suppliers to treat their personnel with respect.

Peter Mac is also a member of the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) which is the self-regulatory body for face to face fundraising in Australia. The PFRA was established to coordinate fundraising activity and promote quality, integrity and transparency. It works with charities, professional fundraising organisations, local authorities and the police to ensure high standards in the industry and to resolve potential issues.

Peter Mac only uses face to face service providers who are members of the PFRA.

Are your fundraisers trained?

Yes. Our fundraisers are continuously trained throughout the year in order to maintain the high standard that we expect from anyone representing Peter Mac. 

We have found our representatives to be extremely caring and passionate about helping cancer patients and have conducted themselves in highly professional and ethical manner.

We have had consistently positive feedback from the general public on their presentation and conduct but always welcome feedback.

Why do we use this method of fundraising?

Peter Mac needs to rapidly increase the funding available for cancer research and, surprisingly, growing our regular monthly giving program is one of the most effective and sustainable way to do this.

Face to face fundraising is also one of the most cost-effective ways to engage passionate members of the public who wish to support new and better treatments for cancer patients and we have found the public to be very responsive to this form of engagement. 

Recent discoveries in immunotherapy, and cancers of the blood, prostate and lung (to name a few), have all been enabled with the help of our regular monthly donors.

For every dollar spent on fundraising, the Foundation raises at least $4 to support Peter Mac research into better treatments and potential cures for cancer. 

Who are your fundraisers and how will I know they are genuine?

Our fundraisers wear Peter Mac branded jackets or t-shirts and carry a branded ID photo-card that also carries the PFRA logo.

What is face to face fundraising?

Our professional fundraisers visit homes and shopping centres in designated areas around Australia, requesting people to give a regular donation to Peter Mac via direct debit.

Each year, more than 180,000 people in Australia decide to donate to charities by regular monthly gift. Of this, approximately 80 per cent are recruited through face to face fundraising. Thanks to face to face fundraising, thousands more Australians have decided to make a difference to important causes, both in Australia and around the world.

Face to face fundraising is successful because it allows an individual to have a personal interaction with a knowledgeable fundraiser who is passionate about helping others. People can ask questions and make sure they truly want to donate to the cause before committing. This kind of interaction allows people to consider the meaning and impact of their decisions.

We work with specialist agencies who help us coordinate and carry out our campaigns, and they use fundraisers who are specially trained to work on our campaigns. The face to face fundraisers working on behalf of the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation are highly valued and respected representatives of our work and organisation. They are professional and passionate about helping people with cancer.

All of our fundraisers and agencies must abide by the law in all of their operations and adhere to the Fundraising Institute of Australia (FIA) and the Public Fundraising Regulatory Association (PFRA) standards and code of conduct. 

Is it true that more than 90 per cent of a donation is paid to your fundraising provider?

No. Our overall cost of compliance and investment to grow financial support for cancer research currently equates to 25%. 

Do you conduct any due diligence before appointing your face to face suppliers?

Yes we do. All our external suppliers are subject to a stringent due diligence process before their appointment, including a review of employment processes, fair work requirements and financial modelling.  

Is Peter Mac using the services of Appco?
