Another Peter Mac Cup Breakfast Success

The greats of the Collingwood and Carlton football clubs united together at the Peter Mac Cup Breakfast on Thursday 5 May 2016 to help Peter Mac defeat cancer.

Held in the iconic MCG Members Dining Room, this year Pies and Blues players and staff, along with over 370 guests, were successful in raising $115K for cancer research at the business breakfast.

Featuring a footy panel of Collingwood and Carlton greats, and star studded interviews with the likes of Nathan Buckley, Steven Sylvani, Marc Murphy and Brendon Bolton, fans had the chance to get the inside-word from both teams on the 2016 season and to secure money-can’t-buy football experiences, such as exclusive access to the Collingwood and Carlton coaches’ hub on game day.

Young mother, Anna Harper, also gave a moving account of her time as a patient at Peter Mac and her passion for raising funds for cancer research.

The funds raised at the Breakfast are invested in the Peter Mac Endowment Fund to help ensure a sustainable source of cancer research funding for generations to come. A particular focus of the  Endowment Fund is providing establishment grants for some of Peter Mac’s boldest and most exciting new research projects. A few of the research projects initiated with the support of past Peter Mac Cup Breakfast events include:

  • a project aiming to develop a world-first pre-clinical platform that will be used to assess new treatment strategies and the basic biology of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), an aggressive disease with poor prognosis
  • a study aiming to identify the optimal anaesthetic technique for cancer surgery, by defining the impact that different anaesthetic techniques can have on tumour relapse and cancer progression
  • a research project aiming to determine whether small molecule inhibitors or antibodies could be used to stop the growth and spread of certain types of triple negative breast cancers, which currently have poor cancer survival rates.
