Walk to Fight Cancer 2023 - Gabrielle's story

25 September 2023

Gabrielle is lacing up her trainers for health, and for love.

This October, Gabrielle Hodson has challenged herself to walk 50km in 10 days to help give people with cancer the best chance of a cure.

“I am so excited to take part in the Walk to Fight Cancer to raise funds for Peter Mac research”, says Gabrielle.

"As with so many families mine has suffered multiple losses to cancer, missing out on years we might have had with our very much-loved people. This in itself is a big motivation to contribute to research for new and better treatments for cancer."

Gabrielle’s own life has been touched by cancer twice – first by endometrial cancer, and three years ago, melanoma.

“I have been so lucky to have had timely and effective surgeries and excellent treatment”, she says

Gabrielle has also stood by her daughter, who has been a patient at Peter Mac since 2021 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We have faced a difficult couple of years as she went through chemo, surgery, radiation and more chemo. As a 29-year-old it was such a shock for her to be suddenly in a whole new and frightening world.”

"As hard as it has been, Peter Mac has given us a great sense of stability and hope. I am thankful that my daughter has had free and timely access to world-leading treatments, giving her the best chance for a cure. This is what it is to feel lucky in the midst of very unlucky times."

Health is our most precious gift, except for our loved ones. I am doing this for health, and for love. Mine, my daughter’s and everyone’s. Let's do this!
