Biography

Prof Peters is Emeritus Professor of Radiation Oncology at Peter Mac and the University of Melbourne. He is an internationally recognised leader in radiation oncology whose research has focussed on optimising the treatment of patients with cancers of the head and neck region. He is widely published and cited in the medical literature and is the recipient of multiple professional awards and honours. He was awarded the AM (2001) and AO (2021) for his services to cancer medicine and medical organisations.

Prof Peters has a long connection with Peter Mac dating from his appointment as the inaugural professor of radiation oncology in 1995. His lifelong goal has been to improve the survival and quality of life of cancer patients through research-driven advances and optimised multi-disciplinary patient care in a comprehensive cancer centre environment. Recognising the critical importance of quarantining philanthropic support of Peter Mac’s research programs for that purpose, Prof Peters was instrumental in setting up the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation as a separate corporate entity in the early 2000s and was Chairman of the Board of Directors of PCMF from its inception in 2002 until he stepped down in 2017.
