Heartfelt gratitude: Ganesh's story

2 min read 19 October 2023

This week we welcomed a visit from Ganesh Sen, whose beloved wife, Usha, passed away at Peter Mac on 19 September 2023.

It was an emotional day for Ganesh, who was visiting Peter Mac for the first time since Usha died.

During his visit, he met with the staff who supported Usha throughout her illness, to say thank you for the wonderful care they provided.

"On behalf of Usha and all our close family and friends, I wholeheartedly thank the caring and compassionate staff who continued to provide Usha with exceptional patient-centred care and support up until her passing”, he said.

To express his gratitude, Ganesh presented a tribute plaque to the team, and shared a selection of Usha’s favourite pastries from Brunetti for morning tea.

We are honoured to share Ganesh’s heartfelt message below:

To the dedicated care and support team at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre,

I extend my deepest gratitude to all of you for the unwavering care and support you provided to my beloved wife, Usha Sen, throughout her remarkable 18-year journey with her illness. Your collective efforts not only prolonged her life but also allowed us to create cherished moments together, for which I will be eternally grateful.

In facing the complex questions and benefitting from Usha’s profound knowledge of medical science, your entire team exhibited an exceptional level of professionalism, compassion, and empathy. Your commitment to delivering patient-centred care with cutting-edge therapies and support exemplifies the remarkable standards upheld by the Peter Mac team.

Usha peacefully passed away on the 19th of September 2023, at Peter Mac’s Ward 1A. During the 44 days and nights I spent by her side, I was deeply touched by the exceptional care provided by the palliative care nursing team, lead by the exceptional Holly Pitt.

I would also like to express my heartfelt appreciation for the remarkable clinicians who accompanied us on Usha’s journey at Peter Mac:

  • Professor Danny Rischin
  • Dr Nikki Burdett
  • Dr Naomi Katz
  • Dr David Bernshaw
  • Dr Patrick Steele
  • Dr Tahlia Molinaro

From the depths of my heart, on behalf of Usha’s husband, Ganesh Sen, and our entire family, I wish to convey our gratitude. Usha Sen, 1970-2023, was a remarkable individual who embraced every moment of her life with resilience, intellect, respect, integrity, and determination. She lived in the moment, and her legacy will forever inspire us.

With profound appreciation,
Ganesh Sen and Family

Ganesh is deeply grateful to Peter Mac and committed to advocating for our work.

In the final days of Usha's life, Ganesh visited the Foundation to create a tribute page in her honour. Since then, caring friends and family have donated over $3,000 in Usha's memory to support cancer research at Peter Mac.
