Last year, life took an unexpected turn for Anna when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. As she faced treatment at Peter Mac, her partner, Sian, and family formed “Team Anna” to run the Melbourne Marathon 2023 in her honour, raising crucial funds for life-saving cancer research. Now, a year later, Anna stands proudly at the start line, nine months cancer-free and ready to run for #TeamPeterMac alongside Sian at Melbourne Marathon 2024. “I don’t take for granted my life and my ability to move,” she says. This full-circle moment is not just about her journey, but a tribute to all those battling cancer. Anna's experience at Peter Mac has shown her the importance of ongoing research: “There is so much more research to be done. During her treatment walking with her family along Melbourne’s bayside was one of the ways she regained her strength. Research is the best and most powerful weapon we have in the fight against cancer. Today, more people than ever before are surviving a cancer diagnosis thanks to investment in cancer research. As Australia’s largest cancer research group, we have some of the brightest minds in cancer research dedicated to making the next life-saving breakthrough. But to do this they need support. “Over the past 20 years, I’ve been passionate about understanding how and why cancers spread to the bones and finding ways to prevent this or treat it when it does. Today, we are nearly there.” Professor Belinda Parker is one of the bright research minds here at Peter Mac, working tirelessly to discover new and more effective cancer treatments and cures. For years, Professor Parker and her team have worked hard to discover and understand the biology behind how cancers in the bone hide from the immune system. They’re focused on finding ways to make metastasised cancer cells visible to the body, so that the immune system can seek them out and destroy them, leading to improved patient survival. “Bone metastasis is one of the major focuses of my lab. It’s most common in hormone receptor-positive women – women whose cancer cell growth is driven by hormones. Currently there is no cure for cancer that has spread to the bones.” In collaboration with leading engineers, Professor Parker and her team have developed a world-first bone scaffold. This prototype is a critical step in researching bone cancers. It provides a viable framework that allows tumours from patients to grow outside of the body, and will allow Professor Parker and her team to investigate the biology behind bone metastasis in the labs at Peter Mac. “I’ve been working on models of metastases for years, and this is a real first. It's the first time we have been able to keep a bone metastases sample taken directly from a patient alive – to see in real time whether we can change the biology of the cancer and make it visible to the body's immune system.” Professor Parker is about to move her project to its next important stage. It’s almost been a week since 750 firefighters took on the 11th annual Melbourne Firefighters Stair Climb. Together they climbed 28 floors carrying up to 25kgs of kit (turnout gear and breathing apparatus) to raise life-saving funds. As a proud beneficiary we are incredibly grateful to @000_foundation and all of the climbers including three special Peter Mac team members, Sean, Liam and Madeline, for their inspiring efforts. The day raised a total of $768,000 with $310,000 of that impressive result going to cancer research at Peter Mac.
