On Saturday 6 September, the 12th annual Firefighters Stair Climb brought together 1,000 firefighters and emergency services crew from across Australia and New Zealand. Together, they took on 28 gruelling flights of stairs at Crown Metropol to support the 000 Foundation, Lifeline and Peter Mac.

Climbers faced the 28 floors in up to 25kg of firefighting gear and breathing apparatus, or similar operational equipment, as a symbol of the physical and emotional burdens first responders and their families carry every day. Incredibly, the fastest firefighter completed the climb in just 3 minutes and 30 seconds.

This year’s event raised an incredible $1,115,000 across 152 fire stations, with $440,000 directed to PMCF and cancer research.  The highest fundraiser was Tanya Lumley (CFA Strathbogie) who raised $15,340 and the highest fundraising team was CFA Buninyong-Mount Helen who raised $33,259.

During the awards presentation, Foundation CEO Craig Connelly shared “It’s the single biggest community fundraising cheque we will receive this year, and the funds deployed to cancer research will maximise the impact and truly change the course of families impacted by cancer.”

A huge thank you goes to the 000 Foundation and the 100+ volunteers who give it their all in the lead up, and on the day.
